Pizza, A Source Of Motivation At Work

At work, what is your source of motivation (money, working conditions, benefits…)? What allows you to re-motivate yourself (a coffee, a funny video, your favorite song…)? According to a study carried out in Israel in 2016, pizza would increase the productivity of employees.

Pizza, a source of motivation: information about the study

Dan Ariely, professor and researcher in psychology at Duke University in the United States, talks about a study he conducted, in his book “Payoff: The hidden Logic that Shapes Our Motivations”. This was carried out at an Intel semiconductor manufacturing plant in Israel. The work of the employees consisted of assembling computer parts. It was therefore a task for which productivity was easily measured.

Before starting the work, an email promising a reward for the perfect achievement of the objectives of the day, was sent to three groups of employees. He was promised:

  • Or a premium of 30 dollars (about 26 euros)
  • Either a free pizza
  • Either a compliment / congratulations from the chef

Study results: money is not the main motivator

On the first day, pizza was the greatest source of motivation (productivity increased by 6.7%), the compliment was the second (productivity increase by 6.6%), the bonus was the third source of motivation (4 , 9% more productivity).

On the second day, the productivity of employees promised a bonus fell by 13.2%. This was also observed for the rest of the week.

At the end of the week, and therefore of the study, compliments turned out to be the best motivator and pizza the second. However, there was only a slight difference between the two results .

Mastering humor at work

Humor can be useful as long as it is well mastered. It is important to use humor in the right way, for example, taking into account the country in which you find yourself (because humor is different according to the cultures), according to the situation, but also according to the interlocutors. It is subjective, therefore not everyone laughs for the same things. Knowing people well is therefore essential, otherwise, we risk finding ourselves in an embarrassing situation. Better to abstain in this case so as not to hurt anyone or fail. At work, it is still better to avoid certain jokes: sexual, racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, salacious …

Self-deprecation is the form of humor that works best. Indeed, this one aiming at laughing at oneself, it makes it possible not to hurt others and shows the capacity to take distance. It also creates a bond of trust.
